Following severe storm damage, conservation groups working in spruce forests are required to prevent a bark beetle infestation as quickly as possible. In most cases, the trunk is completely stripped of its bark to destroy the bark beetles and their habitat.
However, stripping the wood prevents forest restoration and results in a significant loss of biodiversity.
An alternative to removing the bark completely is to score the trunks. The bark beetle requires an area of around 5 cm². By scoring the trunk, the bark beetle is deprived of its habitat without restricting forest restoration.
